Pets at Peace Pet Cemetery and Crematory got its beginning in the winter of January 2003 when “Fred”, a miniature Dachshund who was the constant companion of Joe Dunham, had died after undergoing back surgery.
Joe and his wife Martha owned several spaces in the old abandoned Pet Cemetery on North Highway 349. Since there was no alternative at the time, they obtained a small casket and went out and buried little Fred in that dismal place.
After a couple of days, Joe told Martha that he could not bear to let Fred remain there. So while Martha, a CPA in private practice, spent the evenings working on tax preparations, Joe researched pet cemeteries on the internet. After coming across the IAPC (International Association of Pet Cemeteries) and reading their recommendations for pet cemetery operation, Joe determined that he and Martha would purchase land and create their own special place for their beloved Fred and other cherished pets.
On May 30,2003 the Dunham's purchased a property at 11414 W. Hwy 80 East and on August 1, 2003 had their opening. A few months later they were able to install the Crematory and construct a building.
Through the support of many pet lovers and the local Veterinarians the Dunham's have been able to provide beautiful burial grounds and offer cremation services to folks throughout the county.
